Panel Discussion, Friday April 10th
“Secrets, Shame, and Memoir: Women Writers on What It Takes to Tell the Truth about Our Lives.”  (Janice Gary, Lisa D. Chavez, Rosemary Daniell, Sonja Livingston, Meredith Hall) Memoir requires that a writer be as honest as possible. But this can be especially difficult for women, who carry a legacy of being belittled, blamed, and not believed. Because we have been taught that telling our truths is shameful and risky, we’ve been tempted to censor ourselves, holding back from telling the stories that most need to be told. Hear how the writers on this panel found the courage to write openly and powerfully about their lives, despite all.

I am available for readings and workshops.  I have more than 25 years of teaching experience, and a great track record with helping students do their best work, and get published.  I’d be happy to work with your students on creative nonfiction or poetry!  I am also available to work with writers individually as a writing coach and editor, and am particularly good at manuscript organization and evaluation.  Contact me for more information:   lisadchavez@yahoo.com
